The Miners Arms - HistoryThe former Miner's Arms Hotel, constructed in 1888, is historically significant for being an important link with the earliest period of Broken Hill's colourful past. Standing on a corner site on one of the city's main routes, and having pleasant linear proportions, the former hotel is an important streetscape element. It is part of Broken Hill's excellent collection of current and former hotels which contribute greatly to the character of this major Australian mining centre. Heritage ListedIn 1979 when nominated, the former Miner's Arms Hotel had become an art gallery and was described as being in good condition and intact. A 1987 heritage study indicated that the building was by then a residence and that part of the veranda had collapsed and had been removed. Apart from that the condition was said to be excellent. Restoration of The Miners ArmsBy 2005 the exterior veranda had been rebuilt. By 2008 much of the interior has also been rebuilt after considerable termite damage to the subflooring. Structural repairs have been significant but many of the beautiful features of the original building were intact and now create an aesthetically pleasing blend of the old and new. The long hallways and old wooden doors with stained glass features give The Miners Arms a unique ambience. |
